Frequently Asked Questions

Our Meals

  • Why should I feed Spot & Tango over another diet alternative?

Dogs can survive on commercial pet foods (just as we can get by eating junk food every day!). But, they thrive when nourished with real, fresh ingredients – just like us!

The truth is, most commercial pet foods are full of cheap and potentially harmful ingredients like rendered meat "meals" or powdered meats. Often, these meats (which can contain roadkill and/or expired meat!) would never be accepted for human food production.

Even so-called "clean" kibbles that exclude meat meals are extruded at such high temperatures that the natural flavor and nutrients of the ingredients are destroyed. They then rely on synthetic vitamins, minerals, colors, and spray-on flavors to mimic the smell and taste of real food.

Discouraged by these realities and the alarming rise in pet allergies, obesity, and cancer, we created a common-sense alternative. Whether you opt for our Fresh or UnKibble recipes, Spot & Tango always excludes the junk you'll commonly find in pet foods. It's made from only whole ingredients that you'd eat yourself. Our meals are prepared with love, using gentle cooking methods to preserve nutrients and palatability. Spot & Tango is enjoyed by all kinds of dogs, from seniors, picky eaters, and sensitive stomachs to vibrant puppies!

We've seen the powerful health benefits of feeding pets a fresh ingredient diet first-hand. Many of our customers notice boosted energy, a shinier coat, healthier skin, smaller stools, and brighter eyes. That's why we're on a mission to make high-quality dog food radically convenient for busy pet parents like you!
  • What ingredients do you use?

Our whole produce and proteins come from trusted suppliers. Our ingredient sourcing philosophy is that if we wouldn't feed it to the human members of our family, we won't feed it to our pets — simple as that.

We believe in a minimal ingredient diet, which is why we put our ingredients on the FRONT of our packaging. We're not trying to hide anything or play tricks with paragraphs of ingredients. Everything we put in our food has a purpose for nourishing your pup.

  • How is your food made?

UnKibble is a dry food for dogs made by combining USDA meat, starch, and fresh fruits and veggies into bite-size pieces, then gently dehydrating them through our Fresh Dry process. It is a low-temperature drying technique that retains the natural vitamins, minerals, colors, and aromas of each whole-food ingredient. This process creates a dry food for dogs great nutritional integrity and palatability for your pup!
  • Do your recipes meet AAFCO standards?

Yes, all of our recipes meet or exceed the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (>70 pounds or more as an adult) by formulation and by analysis of the finished product. Our Recipes are Complete & Balanced, meaning they provide your pet with the right amount of every single nutrient their body needs in each meal.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets standards for nutritional adequacy for the pet food industry.
  • Does Spot & Tango need to be refrigerated?

UnKibble: Our UnKibble meals don't require refrigeration, making them perfect for when you're on the go or if you just prefer the ease of shelf stability. Store UnKibble in a cool, dry place (like a pantry). After opening, either reseal the bag or store it in an airtight container to retain freshness. Once a bag is open, aim to use it within eight weeks for optimal freshness.
  • Why can't I just cook food for my dog at home?

Many well-intentioned pet parents cook for their pups. And we're excited when people share our passion for the incredible benefits of real food! That said, research has shown that over 95% of home-cooked dog food recipes do not meet the nutritional requirements for healthy dogs. Too few (or too many!) nutrients can result in serious complications. That's why veterinarians and animal nutritionists formulated Spot & Tango's recipes. So you can sleep easy, knowing your pup is getting exactly what they need.
  • Do your recipes contain artificial preservatives, artificial ingredients, or colors?

Never! All Spot & Tango recipes are entirely free of anything artificial. We use mixed tocopherols (a natural, vitamin E-based preservative) in our UnKibble products. Our primary method of preservation is fresh-drying our UnKibble product.
  • Do your recipes contain fillers like corn, wheat, or soy?

You won't find empty-calorie fillers here! All Spot & Tango recipes are completely free of soy, corn, and wheat.

  • Do your recipes contain fish oil?

Yes! Our UnKibble and Fresh recipes contain fish oil in the Vitamin and Mineral blend as it's a great source of healthy Omegas!

Getting Started With Our Meals

  • How do I transition my dog to Spot & Tango?

Dogs have sensitive stomachs, so please ease into feeding Spot & Tango regardless of your dog's historic level of sensitivity to food changes. Your first box will come with detailed instructions on how to transition. To sum it up, we recommend a slow 7-10 day transition to avoid an upset stomach when switching diets:
Don't worry if you feed a bit more or a bit less than these recommendations! Just remember to gradually introduce Spot & Tango over the recommended period and monitor your dog's progress with a "backyard test."

A "backyard test" just means to keep an eye on their #2, as loose stool can occur during the transition. If this happens, just know that it's completely normal! We recommend holding off on increasing the amount of new food until their stool returns to normal. Continue this process until they're eating 100% Spot and Tango.
  • Do I need to transition between Spot & Tango recipes?

If your dog has fully transitioned to Spot & Tango's UnKibble, it typically isn't necessary to transition between different recipes. But if your dog is sensitive to food changes or has a history of allergies, you may prefer to introduce it more slowly.
  • Does Spot & Tango expire?

UnKibble: Bags should be used within eight weeks of opening. If unopened, bags will stay fresh for up to 12 months.

If you're uncertain about when your meals were delivered, don't worry! You can contact us - just attach a picture of the back of your UnKibble bag. We'll be happy to look up the manufacturing date of your batch and clarify the expiration date for you.
  • What is your return policy?

As a provider of food products, we do not accept returns of any item once it ships.

However, we have a 14-day 100% Happy Pup Guarantee on your Trial order! If your dog doesn't like their food within 14 days of purchasing the Trial, please contact us, and we'll be sure to help you out.

If you have issues with subsequent orders, contact us, tell us what happened, and we'll do everything we can to ensure you're taken care of. Your experience is important to us, so if we can make it right, we will!
